A few days ago we talked about scallops and why they are the symbol of a path and a gastronomy, today, to expand knowledge and become expert sailors, we tell you the differences between scallops and zamburiñas.
Probably, if you’re not Galician, you won’t know exactly how to differentiate a scallop from a zamburiña because of that, we’ll start with the first thing we look at, its appearance, and end with what we value the most, its flavour.
Scallops
As the main difference, the scallops are up to 3 times bigger than the zamburiñas, getting to measure, once opened the shell, up to 5 cm in diameter.
They have a more fleshy texture and although they are not as tender as the zamburiñas, their meat is still very pleasant and has a sweet taste.

The zamburiñas are characterized by having a shell up to 7.5 cm in diameter and a much smaller edible part.
Their taste and quality is much more concentrated than that of scallops, so they are tastier. They have a delicate, tender texture and a sweet taste.
These molluscs are mainly found in Galicia being the best time for consumption between September and May.
